FlavoredLayers Farms is a proposed urban farm project in downtown Utica, NY; just one block from Munson Art Institute and only blocks away from City Hall. This farm will be a central component of Artblok, a larger revitalization initiative designed to reimagine upper Mandeville Street as a hub of culture, creativity, and community.

Inspired by the pioneering work of Blacque Acres in Utica’s Cornhill neighborhood, we will grow fresh, locally sourced produce in an innovative and sustainable way. We will provide healthy options for our neighbors while transforming underused urban spaces into vibrant hubs of growth, creativity, and connection.

Hydroponic Farming Certification

In addition to being a sustainable production farm, FlavoredLayers Farms will offer hydroponic certication, GAP compliance and Certified Organic training.

By equipping local and regional growers with industry recognized credentials and skills, we are preparing Utica and other cities in the Mohawk Valley to take part in the future of urban agriculture.

The Farm Team
David Gutierrez
Founder and Lead Farmer
David Gutierrez is a passionate practitioner of sustainable and hydroponic agriculture, with decades of experience volunteering on farms, supporting farmers markets, and advancing urban and community-based food systems. After earning accredited certification through Cal Poly’s Archi’s Acres Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training (VSAT) program, David launched FlavoredLayers Farms, a 10-acre Certified Organic soil-and-hydroponic production farm in Valley Center, CA.

As one of the early adopters of Certified Organic hydroponic farming, David has continually pushed for innovation in sustainable agriculture. Inspired by Detroit’s urban farm movement, he brings to Utica not only hands-on farm management and technical experience, but also a shared vision for farming as a community-centered food resource.
